About Vegan Wine
The winemaking processes are generally vegan with the possible exception of one area: "fining". This is a process for clarifying wine whereby sediment is attracted to an additive. Once joined together the sediment becomes heavy and drops to the bottom of the wine and the result is a wine which is much clearer in appearence.
There are a number of products available to use as fining additives, which include:
- Bentonite Clay – this is a natural clay so completely vegan
- PVPP – a synthetic agent so completely vegan
- Egg Whites – not Vegan
- Casein (milk powder) – not Vegan
- Isinglass (made from the swim bladders of fish) – not Vegan
The wines included with our platters and hampers only use vegan products as above.
White Wine: Uncle Sauvignon Blanc (Alpha Box & Dice)
This Sav Blanc is named after that awkward, austere Uncle that you only see and remember when you’re dragged along to those unavoidable family outings.
Here’s the run-down on your new coolest uncool Uncle, straight from the horse’s (Winemaker Sam’s) mouth:
“If I’m drinking Sauvignon Blanc, I want it tight, crisp and zingy, embracing the methoxypyrazines (herbaceous characters in normal person words), not denouncing them. My personal winemaking philosophy is that we’re blessed here in Australia with plenty of sunlight and warm weather to provide plenty of flavour precursors in the grapes, so I pick on natural acidity to provide the backbone to the wines and use winemaking techniques to flesh out the body. This wine is all skin and bones – the tight lean crisp acidity creates a refreshing wine for acid addicts thats more reminiscent of Riesling than classic hills Sauvy B.”
It tastes lean, tight and super fresh. Think crunchy apple acidity, sour-sobs and gooseberries. Alpha Box & Dice recommend to drink it with sunshine.
Moscato: Little Miss Collett Moscato (Woodstock)
Named after the daughter of Woodstock owner Scott Collett. This vibrant, youthful and fun wine displays an delicate sophistication just as the young lady herself does. White Frontignac grapes are picked at optimal ripeness and fermentation begins. The ferment is arrested at the halfway point which results in a wine which has approx. half alcohol (6.5%) and half the original grape sugar. NO sugar is added. This is the best (and most expensive) method of producing Moscato (the other being to simply ADD sugar to a cheap wine). It is bottled with a very light spritz and the wine shows elegant aromas of honey, rose petal and Turkish delight. The palate is sweet but not cloying, balanced by the sherbet like spritz. Serve ice cold and pair with softer cheeses.
Sparkling Wine: Zaptung NV Prosecco (Alpha Box & Dice)
Nicknamed "Zappers", this versitile beverage can be enjoyed on its own or used in cocktails - ideal for an Aperol Spritz or Bellinis.
It is light and refreshing, tasting like soft spice, almond paste and white flowers and is suited for all occasions and cheese platters.
Red Wine: Deep Sands Shiraz Cabernet (Woodstock)
A typical Aussie blend of 60% Shiraz and 40% Cabernet. The varieties have been vinified separately and then blended before bottling to present a wine of incredible balance. Judicious use of oak, gently balances the soft berry fruit characters. Soft tannin and delicate balancing acid result in an easy drinking approachable red that compliments any occasion or dish. This is a great example of McLaren Vale red. Concentrated, fruit driven and luscious. The all rounder for cheese pairing.
Premium Red Wine: The Stocks Shiraz (Woodstock)
Made from just 31 rows of 100 year old vines with tiny yields of very small, concentrated berries. The very old vines have enormous root systems that act as great fuel tanks for grape growing. Combine this with a vines natural drop in productivity and you get a vine that puts a lot of effort into very few berries! The grapes are hand picked and sorted to select only the best. They are gently pressed so as to obtain only the sweetest juice from early in the press. The wine then sits in a mixture of American and French oak barrels for 18 months before a further bottle aging before release.
The wine shows intense, deep colour with aromas of dark berries and spice. An intensely concentrated palate with multiple layers of complexity. Savoury spices balancing the berry fruit. A structure of acid and tannin frame the wine and result in an incredibly long finish. This wine will continue to age for decades. Recent James Halliday score 97pts (very few wines ever get above 96). This truly is Iconic McLaren Vale Shiraz. Pair with strong cheeses and flavours.
